Art Education Matters

A couple of weeks ago, I made two trips – on foot, carrying my younger son’s Art A-level Art projects from his (former). 6th Form College.  It is not far from where I live, thankfully; but he had quite a spread of items to collect. I could not help but recall all the ‘Arty stuff’ we did over the years.

All dressed up for Celebrations at Kindergarten

I always felt Art education plays a significant role in a child’s education.  It was something I enjoyed as a child. Probably a subject I felt ‘safe in’ at school. Looking back I probably was what is often called ‘a state of flow’.

After nearly 4 years of running Home Ed Creatives, networking and attending CPD events for Artist Educators; I am increasingly convinced of its significance that Art Education plays in child’s education. Especially so in the era that our children are growing up in – Artificial Intelligence and Climate Crises. AI is able to produce as well as sell Art. But Art Education is more than just producing Art works. The process of creating Art is a journey of thinking creatively whilst building resilience in seeking to overcome challenges that may arise. Essential skills that have sustained human civilisation.

On an individual level, making time to create is such a life giving activity. Doing it together makes it even more special. It plays a significant role in a person’s mental health and well being. I have repeatedly witnessed the ‘state of flow’ experienced by a group of creatives. The absorption in the act of creating can be felt in the silence of the room – apart from the occasional clink of the paintbrush or the snip of scissors.

Art Education really does matter.
